Emissions Trading Print

Aviation was integrated into the European Union Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS) by Directive 2008/101/EC which became law on the 2 February 2009.  As from 1 January 2012 all aircraft operators who operate flights that arrive at or depart from an airport in the EU became subject to the scheme.  This includes non-EU and EU aircraft operators.

Internalisation of External Costs Print

The European Commission (EC) has been studying the so-called "internalisation of external costs" for transport for a number of years. This policy, which would require additional costs to be paid by all transport end-users, is also known as "the polluter pays" or "the end-user pays the full cost including social costs".

Noise Print

Noise-related operating restrictions at European Union airports are currently regulated through national laws, under the European Directive 2002/30/EC.  The European Commission (EC) has proposed replacement of the Directive with a Regulation (directly applicable in all member States), which is part of the Airport Package proposals.

NOx Emissions Print

In January 2008 the European Commission commissioned a study to identify and evaluate European measures to reduce emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) from aircraft. The final report was published in March 2009.
