SINGLE SKY BIGGEST CHALLENGE SINCE LIBERALISATION, SAYS ERA
17/11/2005 - Brussels “The Single European Sky is the most important and ambitious project that the EC has undertaken since its liberalisation of air transport,” claims Mike Ambrose, director general, ERA, on the day that the contract for the Definition Phase was signed in Brussels by the 30 consortium members of the Air Traffic Alliance, Jacques Barrot, Vice President of the European Commission and Victor Aguado, director general, EUROCONTROL. “The industry’s support for the SESAME project indicates its strong commitment to the EC’s objectives. However, Europe’s airlines are reliant upon the Commission overcoming the obstacles of national interest in the same way that it did so successfully with liberalisation. Europe’s airlines and their passengers cannot afford for SESAME to create just another report. It must result in implementing solutions,” Ambrose remarked. The SESAME Definition Phase is a first step towards the kick-off of the actual SESAME implementation phase and will, over a two year period, define and validate the actions to be launched, and their associated committed planning, for securing a safe and efficient high-performance air transport system by 2020. Olaf Dlugi, Chairman of the SESAME Executive Committee said: “Following the successful negotiations with EUROCONTROL, the SESAME Consortium is now concentrating all its efforts towards the successful completion of the Definition Phase. In addition to the cooperative efforts to be conducted in the integrated teams for completion of the six milestone deliverables we will focus on the interaction with the air transport industry. Broad commitment and buy-in going beyond our consortium members will be key success factors for the Definition Phase and the subsequent implementation phase.” The consortium, which includes ERA, consists of a broad and representative range of players from the European air transport industry, bringing together airspace users, airports, Air Navigation Services Providers, Manufacturers & Suppliers.
