EU Regulation 261/2004 is threatening the economic viability of Europe's vital airline industry

Airlines should bear no financial burden for the care of passengers resulting from events that are outside their control and the law that obliges them to do so must be amended before routes become unsustainable and jobs are lost.

ERA Welcomes UK Government's APD Decision Print

The European Regions Airline Association (ERA) today welcomed the UK government's announcement postponing any decision to change Britain's air passenger duty, which taxes each passenger once per journey, to an aircraft based tax, which risks penalising the many millions of British passengers who need to make a connection between flights.

The USA Department of Transport has published proposals to increase protection for its air passengers. These proposed rules do not include any of the disproportionate and unbalanced standards that have been imposed on Europe's airlines since 2005.

Prior to tomorrow's extraordinary meeting of the EU Transport Council, the European Regions Airline Association (ERA) calls upon Europe's Member States to act swiftly to deliver compensation to airlines following the volcanic ash crisis, in a manner which is transparent, which ensures a level playing field for all airlines, and which compensates only those losses incurred as a result of the disruption.
