30 November 2021: ERA members Airbus and Rolls-Royce, alongside German research centre DLR and SAF producer Neste have teamed up to undertake the first in-flight use of pure SAF. The ECLIF 3 study marks the first time 100 per cent SAF has been measured simultaneously on both engines of a commercial passenger aircraft – an Airbus A350 aircraft powered by Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engines.

During the test flight, the emissions coming out of the aircraft were measured with a chase aircraft. The SAF used for the test was unblended, not mixed with any fossil fuel. As the aviation sector is looking at possibilities to reach 100 per cent SAF in aircraft tanks, it is crucial to analyse the performance in real-world scenarios in order to achieve the necessary certification to make this a reality. Current SAF blend is certified at 50 per cent.

The preliminary results of the test flight are very promising. The use of pure SAF can have a positive impact on the aircraft's particulate emissions, which were lower in the test flight. The findings of the study will be published by the end of next year.
