Championing environmental and social responsibility
ERA member airlines are committed to leading the transition to more sustainable aviation, with regional aviation at the forefront of adopting more sustainable technologies. Short-haul flights will play a crucial role in testing and implementing zero-carbon solutions, but any restrictions on these services must ensure alternative transport options provide the same level of connectivity, protecting regional economies and communities.Â
Sustainability in aviation is not solely about decarbonisation – it is also about maintaining social and economic connectivity. Many European regions rely on air links that cannot be easily replaced by other modes of transport. However, the financial burden of new environmental regulations, threatens the viability of regional airlines. Without appropriate financial support, airlines cannot absorb these costs while also investing in sustainable innovations.Â
ERA calls for policies that align environmental ambitions with economic realities. Access to sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) must be guaranteed at regional airports without excessive costs, and airlines need stronger incentives through mechanisms within the EU Emissions Trading System. Additionally, ERA opposes the introduction of a kerosene tax that risks diverting travel outside the EU, harming European tourism and businesses.Â
Addressing skill shortages is also critical, with initiatives needed to attract and retain talent, particularly among women and young professionals, to safeguard the long-term success of the industry.Â
Destination 2050

On 11 February 2021, Europe’s aviation sector launched its flagship sustainability initiative, Destination 2050 – A Route to Net Zero European Aviation, outlining a vision and pathway for significant CO₂ emission reductions in Europe and globally.
Four years later, on 4 February 2025, Destination 2050 released an updated report, underscoring that the time to act is now. Net zero can be achieved through advances in aircraft and engine technologies, widespread use of sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs), improved air traffic management and operations, and targeted economic measures. With efficient EU policy measures, we can secure aviation’s vital and strategic importance and continue driving social and economic progress throughout Europe.Â
